Chapter 2: Nationalism in India-Timeline

1.       1913-1918: Prices of things doubled.   1918-19 & 1920-21: Crops failed in India.

2.       1914-1918: First World War.

3.       1915: MG came back to India.

4.       1917: MG did satyagrah

a.       1917: In Champaran, Bihar for Indigo plantations peasants.

b.      1917: In Kheda, Gujarat for getting relaxation over revenue.

5.       1918: MG did satyagrah for cotton mill workers in Ahmadabad, Gujarat.

6.       1919: Rowlatt act- Controlling political activities.

a.       April 6, 1919: Rowlatt satyagrah was launched by MG.

b.      April 10, 1919: Clash between people and police in Amritsar, Panjab.

c.       April 13, 1919: Jallianwala Bagh Massacre

d.      March, 1919: Khilafat Committee founded, Bombay.

7.       1920: IICC was founded by industrialists.

a.       September  1920: Congress session in Calcutta- NCM was discussed in the name of Khilafat Movement and Swaraj. (Mohammed Ali and Shaukat Ali)

b.      December  1920: Congress session in Nagpur- NCM was adopted.

c.       June 1920: J.L. Nehru visited Awadh.

d.      October 1920: Oudh Kisan Sabha was established by Baba Ramchandra and J.L.Nehru.

8.       1921: Gorilla Movement was initiated by Alluri Sitaram Raju in Gudem Hills, Andhra Pradesh.

a.       January, 1921: NCM was launched.

b.      During 1921-1922: Foreign import halved.

c.       Census 1921: 12-13M were died due to the epidemic and famine.

9.       February 1922: NCM was called off at Chauri Chaura incident.

10.   1924: Raju was executed.

11.   1927: FICCI was established by GD Birla and P. Thakurdas.

a.       1927: Renegotiation of Muslim League with Congress for their demands for forging unity.

12.   1928: Simon commission reached India.

a.       1928: All Parties Conference- M.R. Jaykar from Hindu Mahasabha opposed the demands of Muslim League.

b.      1928: Bhagat Singh established Hindustan Social Republic Army (HSRA)

13.   1929

a.       October, 1929: Lord Irwin brought with vague idea of Dominion status plus Round Table Conference in London.

b.      December, 1929: Congress session in Lahore- Idea of Full Independence (Pooran Swaraj) by J.L.Nehru

14.   1930: B.R. Ambedakar established Depressed Classes Association (DCA)

a.       January 26, 1930: Independence day was celebrated.-Failed.

b.      January 31, 1930: MG wrote an ultimatum to Lord Irwin having 11 demands.

c.       March 15- April 6, 1930: Salt March. (Sabarmati to Dandi / 78 members / 240 miles)

d.      April 6, 1930: MG manufactured salt at Dandi and launched CDM.

15.   1931:

a.       March 5, 1931: Called off CDM. Gandhi-Irwin Pact was signed.-(Second Round Table Conference) – MG disappointed.

16.   1932: CDM was relaunched.

a.       September 1932: Poona Pact. (Reservation to Dalits.)

17.   1934: CDM lost its momentum.

18.   1939-1945: Second world war.

19.   1942: Cripps commission came to India.

a.       July 14, 1942: Quit India Resolution in Wardha, Maharastra

b.      August 8, 1942: Quit India Endorsement. Famous speech of “Do or Die” from MG.
